Case 1: An adult male who boarded the ship on 01 Apr 2026 after more than three months of travel in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. He developed symptoms on 06 Apr 2026 and died on board on 11 Apr 2026. No microbiological tests were performed. He is considered a probable case.
Case 2: An adult female, a close contact of case 1 who traveled and boarded the ship with him, went ashore at Saint Helena on 24 Apr 2026 with gastrointestinal symptoms. She subsequently deteriorated during a flight to Johannesburg, South Africa, on 25 Apr 2026 and died on 26 Apr 2026 in a Johannesburg clinic. On 04 May 2026, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing confirmed hantavirus infection.
Case 3: An adult male who developed symptoms on 24 Apr 2026. He disembarked and was medically evacuated from Ascension Island on 27 Apr 2026 and is currently hospitalized in an ICU in Johannesburg, South Africa. PCR testing confirmed hantavirus infection on 02 May 2026, and Andes virus was confirmed by sequencing.
Case 4: An adult female with onset of symptoms (fever and general malaise) on 28 Apr 2026 later developed pneumonia and died on 02 May 2026. A post-mortem sample was collected and sent to the Netherlands with the evacuated patients, where it was confirmed to be Andes virus.
Case 5: An adult male working as the ship's doctor reported onset of symptoms on 30 Apr 2026, including fever, fatigue, muscle pain, and mild respiratory symptoms. His samples tested positive for Andes virus by PCR on 06 May 2026. The case was medically evacuated to the Netherlands on 06 May 2026
Case 6: An adult male working as a ship guide. Onset of symptoms was reported on 27 Apr 2026, with mild respiratory and gastrointestinal symptoms. Laboratory testing confirmed PCR positivity for Andes virus on 06 May 2026. The case was medically evacuated to the Netherlands on 07 May 2026.
Case 7: An adult male disembarked in Saint Helena on 22 Apr 2026 and flew back to Switzerland on 27-28 Apr 2026 via South Africa and Qatar. He developed symptoms on 01 May 2026 after arriving in Switzerland, immediately self-isolated, and reported to local public health authorities. His samples tested positive for Andes virus by PCR on 05 May 2026.
Case 8: An adult male who disembarked in Tristan da Cunha on 14 Apr 2026. Onset of symptoms was reported on 28 Apr 2026 with diarrhea, and two days later with fever. He was classified as a probable case until laboratory confirmation in the UK on 10 Jun 2026, at which point his case status was updated to confirmed.
Case 9: An adult passenger who disembarked the cruise ship in Tenerife and developed symptoms on the repatriation plane back to France, and was confirmed positive by PCR, and required ICU care including ECMO.
Case 10: One Spanish cruise ship passenger who was quarantined at Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid and tested positive for hantavirus, as reported on Tue, 12 May 2026.
Case 11: A passenger from Canada tested positive for Andes virus presumptively on 16 May 2026. Confirmatory testing at the National Microbiology Lab also returned positive on 17 May 2026.
Case 12: On 22 May 2026, WHO reported that the Netherlands had confirmed a case in a crew member who had disembarked in Tenerife and was repatriated to the Netherlands, where the person has been in isolation.
Case 13: On 25 May 2026, the Government of Spain reported a PCR-confirmed case in an asymptomatic individual who was evacuated from the Hondius cruise ship on 10 May 2026.
