EPIDEMIOLOGICAL COMMENTS
This the first detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 clade 2.3.4.4b virus in New Zealand. Genomic sequencing indicates that the virus is closely related to H5N1 HPAI clade 2.3.4.4b viruses recently detected in Western Australia. The virus has been detected in two wild birds: a subantarctic skua (Stercorarius antarcticus), and an Australasian harrier (Circus approximans). Enhanced general surveillance is continuing. Vaccination of specific populations of endangered native bird species has commenced. To date, 107 high-value birds have been vaccinated.
