Key findings
・ As of 29 Jun 2026, 413 diphtheria cases (410 confirmed, three probable) have been notified nationally (Australia CDC) in 2026, including the one diphtheria-associated death previously reported (BEACON report - 16 May 2026).
The Northern Territory accounts for 54.7% of national cases (226/413) and Western Australia for 42.4% (175/413), with smaller numbers in South Australia (eight cases) and Queensland (four cases). 99.5% of locally acquired cases reside in areas classified as outer regional, remote, or very remote.
